White Nights, Bridges, and Boats: A Summer Itinerary

The high season starts in mid-April. That’s when navigation on the Neva and the canals resumes, the Peterhof fountains switch on, and river excursions begin.

A boat ride from the pier by the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood along the Moika and the Fontanka takes about an hour — the laziest way to see the historic center.

Daytime temperatures in July hover around +22 °C, with nights near +14 °C. A windbreaker comes in handy even in June.

On top of the White Nights, there’s the bridge opening. The central spans of the Palace, Trinity, and Birzhevoy bridges go up from 01:10–01:25 until 04:55. During these hours hundreds of boats take to the water.

On one of the Saturdays in mid- or late June, the “Scarlet Sails” sail along the Neva — Saint Petersburg’s school-graduation festival with fireworks above the fortress.

In the first half of June the city hosts the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). During these dates, hotel prices in Saint Petersburg rise noticeably, so book rooms in advance. Moya Bron lists around 1,450 of them — from 8,640 ₽ per night. Hotels in Saint Petersburg.

Day Trips to the Suburbs: From Peterhof to Kronstadt

The imperial residences are a chapter of their own.

The fastest way to reach Peterhof is by Meteor hydrofoil from the Admiralty Embankment. The trip across the water takes about 35 minutes — this option runs from May to September. The fountains of the Grand Cascade operate on a gravity-fed system, without pumps.

For Pushkin and Pavlovsk it’s easier to take a suburban train from Vitebsky Station. The ride to the Catherine Palace with its restored Amber Room takes the same 30 minutes.

You can see Kronstadt in half a day. Bus No. 101 from Staraya Derevnya metro station will carry you along the dam to St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral and the Island of Forts park.

Gatchina is worth coming back to. A landscape park awaits on both sides of the Grand Palace — and with noticeably fewer people.
